How to Enter
The 2008 Melbourne Airport Developing Tourism Leaders Competition is open to:
- Full time or part time students in their final year of either a Certificate, Diploma or Bachelor Degree in Tourism and/or Events and Hospitality studies programs.
- Students from one of the above programs who will have completed their studies in 2008, who are yet to graduate and are not employed on a full time basis.
Categories for the 2008 DTL Awards:
The entries in this category can be any type of business plan for an attraction, visitor service or tour operation type business. This may include, but is not limited to, one of the following:
- Tour operator business (inbound/outbound)
- Visitor service i.e. transport, language translation, guide book business
- Tourist attraction or development/addition to an existing attraction
The entries in this category must be an event plan for a festival or type of event. Your event must be one of the following subcategories:
Sub-Categories:
a. Special Event (i.e. Sporting Event, Cultural Event, Arts Event)
A special event is designed to create awareness. Special events include functions such as conferences, seminars, workshops, corporate launches, fashion shows, exhibitions and road shows. They are usually an annual event and not an everyday occurrence. The event plan must be followed as in the other sub-categories and the students will be scored as outlined in this Student Kit.
b. Conference and Exhibition
A conference is a prearranged meeting for consultation or exchange of information with one particular topic. Exhibition is a public display such as an art or flower display, designed to advertise or showcase a certain product/service. The event plan must be followed as in the other sub-categories and the students will be scored as outlined in this Student Kit.
c. Festival
A festival is a celebration, usually put on by local communities in which different groups come together to enjoy a certain product or occasion. There are many different types such as cultural, festive, musical, food, wine, public holidays and dates of historical or religious importance. The event plan must be followed as in the other sub-categories and the students will be scored as outlined in this Student Kit.
d. Product Launch
This sub-category requires students to propose an event plan for the launch of any new product/line. The event plan must be followed as in the other sub-categories and the students will be scored as outlined in this Student Kit.
The entries in this category can be any type of business plan for an accommodation, restaurant or cafe type business. This may include, but is not limited to, one of the following:
- Resort
- Caravan or Tourist Park
- Eco Lodge
- Bed & Breakfast
- Chalet
- Restaurant
- Cafe
- Bar

- Read the Rules of the Competition carefully to make sure you are eligible to enter and know the guidelines
- Logon and download the Student Entry Kit for this category which includes the criteria for entering and the format you need to follow.
- Think of a fantastic idea for a business; make sure it fits into the category you are entering in
- Produce your business plan - follow the criteria, format and use the tips on this website!
- Submit your business plan to Service Skills Victoria on the due date with a completed Online Form to be Included with 2008 Entries
- Closing date for submissions is 5pm 17th October 2008 (delivery details included in student kit). Registrations are now closed
